Bay West Midgets Win Mass Hockey Tier III Championships

Backed by the solid goaltending of Devin Basile and Steven DeMont, the BayWest Midget hockey team completed an undefeated weekend, winning the Massachusetts Tier III State Title. The tournament, played in Pembroke, MA featured the 10 best Midget Tier III teams in the state. With wins over Quincy, Pembroke and South Boston in the qualifying round, BayWest had a Sunday morning date with Stoughton in the semi-finals. After defeating Stoughton 5 – 2, BayWest’s next opponent was Framingham in the finals. In a thrilling game, that went to double overtime, BayWest defeated Framingham 2 – 1 on an Eric Brown goal.

During the 5 win weekend, BayWest scored 21 goals while giving up only 5. The defense was led by Andrew Bortolussi, Dan Gallager, Kevin Green, Tom Matroni, Antonios Pitaridis, and Jake Trombley. The offense got excellent play from: Eric Brown, Marc Casey, Mike Gruska, Bobby Johnson, Ryan Magni, Dan Matroni, Nick Planzo, Jerremy Roy, and Kevin Wheeler. The team is coached by: Jack DeMont, Jim Matroni, Rick Casey and Jim Planzo. The BayWest Midget team qualified for the State Tournament by winning the District #6 (Western Mass.) Tier III Midget Tournament in October.
